India’s left-hand opening batter Yashasvi Jaiswal has joined an elite list of players to score 600 or more runs in a red-ball series before turning 23 years old. It is a list that only has some of the legends of the game like Australian legend Don Bradman, West Indies‘ icon Garry Sobers, and India’s very own little master Sunil Gavaskar. Jaiswal achieved this feat with his half-century in the 2nd innings of the 4th Test against England.

Yashasvi Jaiswal has been in sublime form in the ongoing 5-match series in which the Indian contingent find themselves ahead by 2-1. Rohit Sharma’s side took the lead in the 3rd Test at Rajkot by a whopping margin of 434 runs, which is also India’s biggest win in a red-ball match.

And that was made largely possible by Jaiswal’s splendid double-century knock at the Niranjan Shah stadium in the 3rd innings, helping his side post a mammoth target of 557. In response, the English contingent crashed out for just 122 runs as none of the England batters were able to find their rhythm and understand the behavior of the pitch.

Jaiswal departs for 73 off Shoaib Bashir

Yashasvi Jaiswal was expected to continue his run-scoring spree against England in the 4th Test at Ranchi but he failed to carry on the momentum he picked up in the initial period but still was able to score 73 runs. It was a welcome wicket for England who desperately wanted to remove Jaiswal who has proved to be their Kryptonite.

The job was executed by England’s right-arm off-spinner Shoaib Bashir who is playing in only his 2nd international Test match. Bashir bowled a middle stump length delivery that remained quite low with Jaiswal just chopping off his bat with the ball before it struck the stumps.

It was Bashir’s 4th of the day and perhaps the most enjoyable one as he removed a batter who had scored 600 runs in 4 Test matches only. Following Yashasvi Jaiswal’s soft dismissal, 2 more wickets of Sarfaraz Khan and Ravichandran Ashwin fell moments later and the hosts currently find themselves behind in the match.

England bowlers have received a lot of assistance from the pitch, especially the spinners who are seemingly on a roll on a pitch that is producing a severe amount of uneven bounce. If the pitch is getting hard to bat on at the moment (2nd innings) then just guess what will happen when India comes out for their 4th innings chase.

Yashasvi Jaiswal becomes the 7th batter to score 600 runs in a series before 23 years of age

With his 73 off 117, Yashasvi Jaiswal has reached 618 runs from 7 innings in the series and that has helped him become just the 7th batsman ever to score 600 or more runs in a single red-ball series before turning 23. He joins the likes of Don Bradman, Garry Sobers, Sunil Gavaskar, Graeme Smith, George Headly, and Neil Harvey.

Bradman had scored 974 runs during a Test series against England in 1930, Garry Sobers scored 824 against Pakistan back in 1957/58, Gavaskar amassed 774 against West Indies in 1970/71, Smith scored 714 against England in 2003, Headly smacked 703 against England in 1929/30, Harvey scored 660 in 1949/50 versus South Africa and Yashasvi Jaiswal will continue from 618 when he comes to bat in the 4th innings.
