Young Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal achieved a massive milestone during the opening day of the fifth and final Test match against England. Yashasvi Jaiswal became the third batter, following England’s Graham Gooch and Joe Root, to reach this landmark in Tests.

Yashasvi Jaiswal has been in terrific form during the ongoing series against England. The left-handed batter has recorded two double-hundreds in the series so far. He continued his batting form in the fifth Test at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium.

The 22-year-old batter scored 57 runs off 58 balls in India’s first innings in Dharamsala on Thursday, March 7. The southpaw broke Virat Kohli’s record for the most runs for India in a Test series against England. Kohli scored 655 runs in the 2016 Test series at home.

Jaiswal also became only the second batter, after the legendary Sunil Gavaskar, to surpass the milestone of 700 runs in a bilateral Test series. Gavaskar achieved this feat twice against the West Indies, scoring 774 runs in 1970-71 and 732 runs during the 1978-79 season.

Yashasvi Jaiswal also became the first Indian and only the third player overall to surpass the 700-run mark in a Test series between India and England. Prior to Jaiswal’s achievement, English legends Graham Gooch and Joe Root achieved this feat in the longer format.

Gooch achieved 752 runs across three Tests against India in 1990, while Root accumulated 737 runs in a five-match Test series against India and England in 2021–22. Jaiswal has the opportunity to break this record if India bats in the ongoing match’s second innings.

Yashasvi Jaiswal Has Achieved It So Early – Zaheer Khan

During a conversation on Colors Cineplex, Zaheer Khan praised Yashasvi Jaiswal for surpassing the 700-run milestone in the ongoing Test series, highlighting Jaiswal’s hunger for runs and foreseeing a promising future for Indian cricket.

“You saw the hunger for runs in him, which is a very good thing. Even the greatest of batters have very few series like this and Yashasvi Jaiswal has achieved it so early in his career. So I feel it is a huge thing,” he said.

“The expectations from him will now be at this level only because he has shown an approach like that. We saw all the things that make a batter great. It is very good for Indian cricket as well if a top-order batter possesses abilities like this. So the future is looking very bright,” Zaheer Khan added.

Jaiswal has scored 712 runs in nine innings at an impressive average of 89 and an equally impressive strike rate of 79.91. The young cricketer has smashed two hundred and three half-centuries. He has also hit 26 sixes in the red-ball series on home soil so far.
