Former Indian opening batsman Gautam Gambhir has said that “nothing changes” for Virat Kohli after stepping down as India’s captain.

Virat Kohli had stepped down as India’s T20I captain following the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 and he was sacked as One Day International captain as the BCCI wanted to have just one white-ball captain, so the selection committee appointed Rohit Sharma as the new white-ball skipper of the team. Also, Virat Kohli had stepped down from Test captaincy after the Test series defeat in South Africa.

Meanwhile, Gautam Gambhir has said that winning is the only thing that matters to a player and leading the team is just an “honour and responsibility”.

“Nothing changes,” Gambhir told Sports Today what he thinks changes for Kohli and the Indian team management’s approach towards him.

“When you are growing up as a kid you want to try and win games for the country and that is all that matters. You don’t dream of captaining the side from day one so for me nothing changes. If it does then there is something seriously wrong. Captaincy is just an honour and responsibility and I’m sure Virat would be thinking the same way,” said Gambhir.

Gambhir, who has been appointed as the mentor of Lucknow Super Giants in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022, said that he doesn’t believe in the templates and he feels that the templates in cricket are simply overrated. Gautam Gambhir also said that the only template a team need is to score the last run while chasing and pick the last wicket while defending.

“I’ve always thought of only one template which is to score the last run if you are chasing and take the last wicket if your defending. As simple as that, there is no other template that makes sense to me. All these are created by the media, the finisher, opener, death bowler and all.

“Cricket is a very simple game. All of us would want that when we are chasing a total, we should score the last run and if we are defending, we should take the last wicket and take the points in our kitty. That is all that matters and the only template. Templates are very overrated,” he said.
