England Test head coach Brendon McCullum has opened up about his working relationship with captain Ben Stokes amid growing scrutiny of the team's recent performances. McCullum and Stokes have faced criticism from former players and pundits following a series of disappointing results in red-ball cricket.

Pressure has increased on England's leadership group after the team's 4-1 Ashes series defeat to Australia earlier this year. McCullum and Stokes will now look to guide England back on track during a crucial home summer, which begins with a three-match Test series against New Zealand at Lord's on June 4.

I Think Ben Stokes And I Have Worked Brilliantly Together - Brendon McCullum

Brendon McCullum defended his working relationship with Ben Stokes and said the two have built a strong partnership over the last four years. The England head coach stated that honest and sometimes challenging discussions are a natural part of their relationship.

"You're never going to agree on everything, right? I think Stokesy and I have worked brilliantly together for the last four years. Throughout that time, we've consistently had robust conversations, and that's because we respect one another," McCullum said.

During the recent five-match Ashes series against Australia, Stokes endured a difficult run with the bat. The England captain scored 184 runs at an average of 18.40 and a strike rate of 36.58. However, he made a strong impact with the ball, taking 15 wickets at an average of 25.13.

Disagree, Commit, And Move Forward Together - Brendon McCullum On Working With Ben Stokes

Brendon McCullum said that disagreements are a natural part of any successful leadership partnership. The England head coach stated that while he and Ben Stokes do not always share the same opinion, they remain united once a decision has been made and focus on moving the team forward.

"We both share the same vision for where we want this team to go. If anything, this last period has given us an even clearer direction on how we're going to operate as captain and coach. Fundamentally, we just want what's best for the team and for all the fans who support English cricket."

"It's okay if Stokesy and I disagree on things at times. That's life and that's how it works. But once you decide on a direction, you disagree, commit, and move forward together. That's what we've done, and that's what we'll continue to do."

England Look To Move Forward After Disappointing Ashes Campaign

England's 4-1 Ashes defeat in Australia has increased pressure on Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes ahead of a crucial home season. The team faced criticism for inconsistent performances, questionable selection decisions, and an inability to adapt to Australian conditions.

The series exposed several weaknesses in England's approach, particularly against high-quality bowling attacks and in key match situations. England's management remains committed to the aggressive style of cricket that has delivered notable successes since McCullum and Stokes joined forces in 2022.

They have repeatedly stated that they will continue backing their attacking philosophy while making necessary adjustments based on recent lessons. England will now turn their attention to a three-match Test series against New Zealand, starting at Lord's on June 4.
