Yuzvendra Chahal Declares India As The No. 1 Contender To Win The T20 World Cup

India limited-overs specialist Yuzvendra Chahal might not have performed consistently in his recent opportunities; however, the leg-spinner remains very much in the mix ahead of the T20 World Cup. Yuzvendra Chahal’s plans of getting back to form also got disrupted since the BCCI had to postpone IPL 2021 definitely due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But the Haryana-born wrist-spinner is confident of India’s chances at the T20 World Cup this year.

Though there are doubts over the T20 World Cup’s venue, India remains on track to host the tournament. If the sub-continent stages the competition, Virat Kohli’s men would have a genuine chance of winning it for the first time since 2007. They fell agonizingly short in 2016 as the West Indies, the eventual champions, beat them comprehensively in the semi-final at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

Yuzvendra Chahal believes India have all their bases covered as the pool of 22-23 players in the mix are the best. The 30-year old conceded that across departments, the men in blue have the best cricketers, with top-notch quality and adequate preparation. Chahal further claimed that their experience makes them a massive contender for lifting the trophy.

“I feel we have covered all bases. You know the 22-23 players that are in the reckoning for the World Cup. All slots have been filled. If you look at the middle-order, spinners, medium-pacers or batsmen you will see there is adequate preparation for the World Cup. Due to our experience, we are the no.1 contenders for the World Cup,” Chahal told Sports Tak.

Yuzvendra Chahal also feels that the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka would be the last stop as players doing well there have a great chance of earning a berth in the World Cup squad. As for him, Chahal is right now focused on the Sri Lankan series and does not want to think about the World Cup as it will veer his concentration away.

“It is a final exam after years of hard work. Those who do well will get the World Cup reward. My target is to perform well in the matches I play. There is no undue pressure because all my focus would be on the Sri Lanka tour, and the World Cup is after it. If I start thinking about it right now, my focus will move away from the Sri Lanka tour,” he added.
