Punjab Kings have received a boost ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) Qualifier 2 clash against Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday, June 1. Veteran leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal, who has been out of action due to a finger injury, could make his comeback.

Yuzvendra Chahal missed the last three games for Punjab Kings, including Qualifier 1 against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in Mullanpur, due to a finger injury. He last played an IPL match against the Rajasthan Royals (RR) on May 18. The spinner went wicketless and conceded 30 runs during the match.

Punjab Kings Likely to Get Yuzvendra Chahal Boost Against Mumbai Indians

Left-arm spinner Harpreet Brar played as the specialist spinner for Punjab Kings in Yuzvendra Chahal’s absence. As reported by RevSportz, Chahal was seen taking part in fielding drills and later had an extended conversation with head coach Ricky Ponting ahead of the must-win Qualifier 2 match.

The spinner hasn’t had the best of seasons, picking up 14 wickets in 12 games at an economy rate of 9.57. However, with Punjab’s three-hour training session in Ahmedabad, briefly interrupted by light showers, the team may welcome back their spinner for the high-stakes clash against the Mumbai Indians.

Yuzvendra Chahal Willing to Take Injections if Needed

According to TimesofIndia.com, Yuzvendra Chahal is prepared to take injections if necessary to be fit for selection. Chahal’s right wrist remained under protection during training, but he bowled a couple of overs in an empty net, took catches, and even joined a football session with teammates.

Chahal had also bowled in practice ahead of Qualifier 1 but was ultimately left out of the playing XI against RCB. While the team has not officially confirmed his return, there is growing optimism that he could feature in the must-win match against the Mumbai Indians.

Chahal has picked up two four-wicket hauls—one against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and another against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Notably, his spell against KKR on April 15 in New Chandigarh was instrumental in defending a modest total of 111.

We Know We’re Going to Have to Go... - Punjab Kings Bowling Coach

Punjab Kings suffered a heavy defeat in Qualifier 1 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur, New Chandigarh. They managed to score just 101 runs. Meanwhile, RCB chased down the target with 10 overs to spare.

Punjab bowling coach James Hopes emphasized the need to come back strong, noting that Ahmedabad historically offers good batting conditions. He said they need to make the most of this second chance after months of hard work to reach this stage.

"Historically, Ahmedabad is a very good pitch and we know we're going to have to go quite hard and score quite quickly. It's not back to the drawing board by any means. We've worked two and a half months to get into a position where we get a second opportunity and we're going to have to use that second opportunity now," he said on the eve of the match.
