In shocking news, Will Fazakerley, the Leicestershire allrounder, has announced his retirement from professional cricket with immediate effect aged just 19.

Fazakerley had initially joined the club’s Academy after coming through the age group system at Sussex. He went on to sign a professional contract and made his first-class debut for Leicestershire against Sussex last year, picking up one wicket for 83 runs.

The teenager, who also represented Guernsey, decided to bring down curtains on his cricket career to focus on a career outside of the game.

“I’d like to thank everybody for giving me the opportunity to play professional cricket but I have decided that now is the right time to pursue opportunities outside of cricket,” he said.

Wasim Khan, Leicestershire Chief Executive, wished Fazakerley for his future endeavors.

“We fully understand Will’s decision to look for a different direction in his life outside of professional cricket and we wish him all the very best in the future,” Khan said.

Fazakerley’s decision might be a shocking one, but it was not an unexpected one. In November last year, he had made it clear that he was looking to pursue a career in football. His cricket career took a huge blow last year when just after making the first-class debut, he suffered a season-ending stress fracture of the back. Fazakerley did not return to action after suffering the injury despite still having two years remaining on his contract.

“Basically, I will have a few weeks thinking about it and then make a final decision over what I am going to do in January and inform Leicestershire, who I have already met about it recently,” he had said in November last year.

“My injury does not affect me in any other way except for my bowling action – I can bat, I can dive and throw myself around and I can play football and other sports. But whatever I do, I want to do it to the very best of my ability and if I cannot bowl at all, I am not sure whether being a professional cricketer is the way to go,” he had added.
