First T20I between India-West Indies in jeopardy

But dark clouds loom large over the future of the first T20I match on December 6 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. This follows a communication by the Mumbai police to the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) expressing their inability to deploy the police force needed for an international match that day. December 6 marks the death anniversary of Dr B R Ambedkar and also it will be the first anniversary of Babri Masjid demolition after the Supreme Court’s Ayodhya verdict. As a result, there will be massive police deployment in the city to avoid any untoward incidents.

“A Mumbai police representative had come to share the ground situation in our Apex Council meeting today. Senior MCA officials have sought time to meet the Commissioner of Police Sanjay Barve tomorrow where more clarity would be provided, if the match is possible on the scheduled date or not,” a MCA official said.

The services of around 1,200 police personnel and 300 traffic personnel are needed for an international cricket match in Mumbai. The Mumbai Cricket Association officials are keen to go forward with the game and have suggested to the police that they be allowed with 25 percent police with the rest to be made up of hired private security personnel. However, the final decision will be taken only after the meeting with the Commissioner of Police in a few days time.
