The former skipper of India once revealed an interesting story in a cricket show hosted by Mayanti Langer in presence of VVS Laxman. Sourav Ganguly was not a kind of person, who shy away from giving it back to the opposition. And also, he always backed his players to not back down against sledging. Unfortunately, he never got the support from his players, as they are gentlemen.

“If you tell Rahul Dravid to do that, he’ll be like ‘no no no that is not the right way to play’. If you tell Laxman, he will be like ‘ no no I am concentrating on my batting’. And if you tell Sachin, he will stand on mid-on and ask the mid-wicket fielder to sledge Steve Waugh.”

You won’t often come across Ravi Shastri losing his words when he is in the commentary section. But Sourav Ganguly made him lose it when he was doing the commentary role for an international game.

Ravi Shastri asked Sourav Ganguly why there wasn’t a stand named after him at the Eden Gardens. The Price of Kolkata was quick to respond, “The entire stadium belongs to me.”

You always enjoy a banter of old friends, who reveal new stories to the listeners. The same thing happened when Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid involved in a friendly war of words during their commentary stint alongside Harsha Bhogle.

It was when India toured England in 2014. During the first Test at Nottingham, once again the tail came to haunt the visitors. From 298 for nine, England had recovered to 460/9, it certainly didn’t please fans but commentators gave delight to the fans.

Dravid: “Sanjay Manjrekar made a really good point in the commentary box. If Ganguly had been a yard quicker and just a little bit fitter, he would have been a match-winner.”

Ganguly: “I wish I was Prime Minister of India. I could have done a whole lot of things.”

Bhogle didn’t want to get into the conversation at all and urged Dravid to stage a comeback in the battle of words.

Bhogle: “I almost feel like not getting into this conversation. I’m getting away, this is some serious sledging. Come on Rahul, don’t be a good boy here.”

It was when India met Pakistan for the fourth time a World Cup match. Political tensions between the two countries had ensured that the two sides hadn’t played a game in almost three years. It was the 2003 World Cup when India is being led by Sourav Ganguly.

In 2005, Mohammad Yousuf, then known as Yousuf Youhana, was trying some time-wasting tactics against India. Meanwhile, Ganguly realised he might be penalised for a slow over-rate. So, he sprung into action. He made it clear to Yousuf to have a note of the time. As always, Ganguly was loud in conveying his message. For quite a few days, the banter went viral on the Internet.

Chasing 326 to win, the visitors wasted good start to stumble to 146/5.  However, Yuvraj Singh (69) and Mohammad Kaif (87*) added 121 for the 6th wicket to bring them back into the match. Kaif was still there at the end as Zaheer Khan squeezed out the winning runs with 3 balls and 2 wickets to spare. Certainly, it sent both fans and players into a frenzy.

Meanwhile, Ganguly did the unimaginable. He took off his jersey and started waving it over his head! Some choice words were uttered too. This was in vengeance to Andrew Flintoff celebrating by taking off his jersey in a match against India in Mumbai earlier the same year.

Geoffrey Boycott: You must mention your experience of taking your jersey off and flying it in the air at the Mecca of cricket – Lord’s! Ohh you naughty boy!

Sourav Ganguly: One of your boys also took off his jersey here in Mumbai.

Geoffrey Boycott: Ya, but Lord’s is the Mecca of cricket.

Sourav Ganguly: Lord’s is your Mecca Wankhede is ours.
