7 Instances When A Batsman Scored 200 And Got Out On A Duck In The Same Test Match; Test runs are perhaps the most prized possession of any batsman. A Test double century, by all means, is an accomplishment of a dream. At the same time, getting out without troubling the scorers is perhaps the greatest agony. Over the years, we came across such moments in the game of cricket for seven occasions.

There are players, who came with all their guns blazing to knock a double century for his respective country.

However, in the same game, the very batsman registered a duck to make it a bitter-sweet memory of his life.

Here, in this article, we came up with seven instances when such records were registered.

The flamboyant batsman of South Africa is the first batsman in the history of cricket to achieve such feat. He first registered a duck against Australia in the home game at Johannesburg in 1935.

However, in the second innings, Dudley Nurse showed his class by smashing a stunning 231 runs with the help of 36 overs.

Trailing by 93 runs in the 2nd innings, Nourse toiled hard to get his side in the game. His knock helped South Africa to put 399 runs target on the board for Australia. However, Australians batted brilliantly in the fourth innings, which saw the game end in a draw.

It would have been a rare occasion in a Test match to see two batsmen scoring a double century in the same game but the umpires called stumps when McCabe was on 189* in the fourth innings of the game.

Imtiaz Ahmed was known as an aggressive batsman who had a variety of strokes, most notably the hook and the pull shot. He scored 2,079 Test runs for Pakistan with a career-best of 209 against New Zealand in Lahore in 1955.

It was the same game, where he registered duck in the second innings.

Imtiaz Ahmed is one of the members, who played in the first-ever Test of Pakistan in Delhi against India. Coming to a particular game, Imtiaz, who came to bat at the number eight when the team was struggling with 111/6 on the board, scored a remarkable double century with the help of 28 boundaries.

He partnered with Waqar Hasan to stitch 308 runs for the seventh wicket. Following the double century, he got the promotion to bat at number 3 while chasing 116 runs but unfortunately, failed to open his account.

It was a rare game in the history of cricket when three double centuries were registered in a single game. The openers of Australia Lawry and Simpson scored double centuries in the first innings to post a massive total of 650 runs on the board.

In reply, West Indies scored 573 with the help of SM Nurse, who scored a brilliant 201.

In 2nd Innings, Australia declared by adding 175 runs to the lead of 78. Chasing 253 runs on the board, West Indies were so close to the victory despite Nurse scoring a golden duck.

They scored 243 runs with the loss of five wickets but umpires called curtains when the hosts required 12 runs with five wickets in hand. End of the day, the rules were rules. It was played at Bridgetown in West Indies in 1965.

After 19 years, the same feat was registered from the same country, ironically, against the same country.

However, this time, it was played at Melbourne. Sir Viv Richards exhibited shots when he scored a double century, powering his side to a competitive 479.

Australia folded for 296 and it was Richards’ responsibility again to pile the runs to set the Australians an improbable target. That plan though didn’t work as he walked away with a second-ball duck.

However, the collective efforts of the other batsman helped West Indies set a 370 target for Australia.

West Indies were so close to victory by removing 8 wickets in the chase but the visitors held their nerves to draw the game.

It was a game well-remembered for the victory of India on Australia soil after 26 years. However, the game is also remembered for Ricky Ponting’s stunning double century against hapless Indian bowling attack.

Ponting’s epic helped the Aussies put a score of 556 on the board but the inspired Indian team, led by Rahul Dravid’s 233, ran their opponents close by piling on 523 runs in their first innings.

In the Australian 2nd innings, Ricky Ponting struggled around for 17 balls before being dismissed for a duck by Ajit Agarkar. None of the other Aussie players managed to score big and they folded up for 196. India chased down a target of 230 runs with 4 wickets to spare and recorded a memorable victory.

A career which spanned 17 years saw Ponting play 168 Tests and scored more than 13,000 runs at an average of nearly 52. He scored as many as 41 centuries, out of which quite a few were brilliant double hundreds.

It was one of the sensational knocks played by Shoaib Malik for Pakistan and also one of the finest comeback announcements. Shoaib Malik made a comeback in the longest format in 2015 after 5 years for a series against England.

In his very first knock post returning, Malik scored an epic 245 at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi. The Pakistani batsman, though, could not follow up well on his double ton and was out for nought to James Anderson.

None of the batsmen of Pakistan was succeeded in facing England attack in the second innings, eventually, being bundled out for 99 runs on the board.

However, bad light helped their cause to push for a draw.

Playing his 45th Test, the 29-year-old Shakib became only the third Bangladesh batsman to score a Test double-century after his current teammates Tamim Iqbal and Mushfiqur.

Shakib reached his maiden double century from 253 balls and passed many milestones along the way.

His partnership with Mushfiqur Rahim is the highest fifth-wicket stand by any team against New Zealand. Shakib’s knock also helped Bangladesh’s to put its highest Total in Tests against New Zealand, beating its previous best of 501, and was it’s fourth highest overall.

In reply, Tom Latham’s 177 helped New Zealand reach 539.

Taking 56-run leading, Bangladesh was expected to do something exceptional but the second innings collapse and the brilliance of Kane Williamson helped New Zealand seal the game by 7 wickets.
