Aakash Chopra revealed an interesting story involving the former Indian head coach, Greg Chappell and Deepak Chahar.
The former Australian player who was the director of Rajasthan Cricket Academy and told Chahar he would never become a cricketer. Thus, Chappell asked the fast bowler to leave cricket itself.
However, Chahar was able to prove Greg Chappell wrong, as he earned his maiden Indian call-up recently. The Rajasthan pacer was right on the money in the IPL while playing for Chennai Super Kings. He scalped ten wickets in the 12 matches he played in the league.
Chahar kept digging in.
Furthermore, Chahar was able to carry his good form with the India A side on England tour.
The fast bowler took 13 wickets in the five List A games. Moreover, he scalped seven wickets in the three matches of the tri-series.
“Chahar’s story is very exciting. When he was younger, he used to practice in Rajasthan in Hanumanghar, he met Gregg Chappel – the director of the Rajasthan Cricket Academy at that time, who told him to leave cricket. Chappell told him to leave cricket not because he wouldn’t get selected into the academy but he told him that he would never become a cricketer itself,” said Chopra in his segment of Aakash Vani on Facebook.
Meanwhile, it is well known that Greg Chappell and Indian cricket shared a sour relationship when India touched new lows under Greg’s tenure as a coach.
Deepak Chahar can impress with his skills at the topmost level. Thus, he would be raring to go against England in the T20I series. It would be interesting to note if he gets his maiden opportunity.
Chahar was instrumental in the win of the Chennai Super Kings. Interestingly, he was able to get most of his dismissals in the powerplay overs. The fast bowler got the ball to swing both ways at an impressive pace in the IPL.
