There is no doubt about the fact that veteran Mahendra Singh Dhoni is one of the most popular faces in the world of cricket. His cricketing journey has been nothing short of a fairytale.
The 37-year-old Dhoni is a limited-overs legend and his record, especially in the 50-over format, speaks volume of his credentials as a batsman and a wicketkeeper in the shorter formats.
Emerging from the suburbs of Jharkhand, Dhoni became one of the finest skippers the world has ever seen. He still remains the only skipper till date to lead his nation to three major ICC trophies.
Well, it includes the ICC World Twenty20 in 2007, the ICC World Cup in 2011 and the ICC Champions Trophy in 2013. He led the side with disdain and under his leadership, India excelled at new heights.
It was under Dhoni’s captaincy that India managed to occupy the number one spot in the ICC Test Rankings. He was a force to reckon across all formats.
However, when it came to the 50-over format, Dhoni looks a completely different player. Very recently he became only the fourth Indian batsman to reach the figures of 10,000 ODI runs.

The middle-order batsman Dhoni has been a prolific run scorer in ODI’s over the years. However, when it comes to the longest format, Dhoni hasn’t been a great captain nor a highly prolific batsman. He was currently in England for the limited-overs series.
In addition, he might be back home as he won’t be featuring in the longest format of the game. Dhoni had collected match ball from the on-field umpire Michael Gough which raised speculations of a possible retirement of Dhoni.
It was early too early to comment on this issue. But Mahendra Singh Dhoni had done the same thing in 2014 when he suddenly announced his retirement from Test cricket.
Despite retiring from Tests, Dhoni went onto lead India with disdain in the next couple of years.
Under his coaching, India played till 2016. His last major tournament was the ICC World Twenty20 in the same year. When he understood that it is time for Virat to take the captaincy, Dhoni handed over the reign to him.
Despite giving up captaincy, Dhoni still guides Kohli in his endeavours. He has given up captaincy in 2016 and the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) official website says that Dhoni is still serving as the captain of Team India.
