Australia’s Matthew Wade came up with a bizarre batting tactic in the ongoing Perth Test against New Zealand. On a wearing pitch, New Zealand’s pacers especially Neil Wagner resorted to short bowling and managed to get two early wickets including that of Steve Smith. When Matthew Wade came out to bat, he was welcomed with the same stuff.

But unlike his teammates, Matthew Wade decided against going for the fancy pull and hook shots and instead decided to let the balls hit him. He played more deliveries with his body and arm than with his bat before throwing his wicket away.A majority of Wade’s 51 deliveries were fired in at his body and he did little to get away from the line of ball.

Incidentally, his bizarre innings was ended by a short ball only after being caught at deep square leg off Colin de Grandhomme. Following Wade’s knock, former Australia wicketkeeper-batsman Adam Gilchrist could not help but troll Wade. He took to Twitter to describe Wade’s innings with a hilarious picture, tweeting:

Commentators shocked with Wade’s knock:

Matthew Wade’s innings also left commentators Kerry O’Keeffe and Michael Vaughan a bit surprised. Both the commentators called the innings bizarre as Wade struggled to play his usual game.

“It was a bizarre innings from Matthew Wade,” O’Keeffe said.

“That can’t be the way Matthew Wade wants to play in Test cricket,” Vaughan added. “He’s a Test match number five you’ve got to ask a question or two of the bowler.”

Australia, meanwhile, are in command of the proceedings in Perth. They declared their second innings on 217 for 9 to set the visitors an improbable total of 468. In reply, New Zealand were off to a poor start and were reeling at 124 for 5 at the time of compiling this report.
