Former Australia wicket-keeper batsman Adam Gilchrist is all up for an addition of another umpire to arrive at the right decision especially for making no-ball calls not affect the game. Notably, Indian Premier League (IPL) Governing Council are pondering over bringing an extra match official.

Front-foot no-ball calls have been a contentious issue in cricket for a while. The umpires have often come under the scanner in recent times for missing out on the no-balls, and only checking with the TV umpire if the batsmen get out.

Meanwhile, the International Cricket Council (ICC) is also conducting trials to introduce an extra umpire who will be responsible for making no-ball calls. However, the only consideration is that it might slow up the game. But Adam Gilchrist feels it will not be an issue.

“No, no [I don’t think it’ll slow things down], because they can do it in an instant. I know, I work in broadcast, you can have a replay within five seconds. In football, VAR seems to be slowing it down a little bit,” Gilchrist said. “I think, if it’s a line decision [in cricket], you can have a replay like that [in a matter of seconds],” he added.

Meanwhile, it solely remains with Indian Premier League and ICC authorities to take the final call on bringing an extra umpire. However, Adam Gilchrist feels the third umpires should monitor the no-balls from now on looking at the replays.

“Why can’t the third umpire just look at the replay and just go not out? That should be allowed. Whether you need a fourth umpire, maybe not,” he concluded.
