Australia leg-spinner Adam Zampa has been reprimanded by the ICC in addition to receiving a demerit point for a Level 1 breach of the ICC Code of Conduct during the World Cup 2019 game against West Indies on Thursday (June 6).

The incident took place during the 29th over of the West Indies’ innings. Adam Zampa then used ‘an audible obscenity’ and the on-field umpires noticed it too. In doing so, Adam Zampa breached the Article 2.3 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel which relates to using audible obscenities in an international match.

Talking about the game, Australia recovered from an awful start to beat West Indies by 15 runs in a see-saw clash. Bowling first, West Indies had reduced the defending champions to 38-4 and 79-5. However, Australia’s former skipper Steve Smith held strong and made 73 before being dismissed towards the end of the end when Sheldon Cottrell took an incredible catch.

By the time Smith was out, Nathan Coulter-Nile, batting at number eight, had already begun his power hitting in a 60-ball 92 that lifted Australia to 288 all out. In reply, Shai Hope and Jason Holder hit fifties to keep West Indies in contention. However, the two-time champions lost wickets at crucial junctures and eventually finished on 273 for 9.

Mitchell Starc derailed West Indies’ chase when he dismissed Holder and Carlos Brathwaite in the same over. Starc had gone on to pick up 5 wickets for just 46 runs. In the process, he also became the fastest to 150 wickets in ODIs. Australia, nonetheless,  joined New Zealand on two wins from two matches. They will now play India on Sunday. West Indies, with one win and one defeat, take on South Africa on Monday.
