When it comes to most runs in the tournament, most sixes, maximum average, and most half-centuries, all this belongs to K.B Arun Karthik of Siechem Madurai Panthers in the Tamil Nadu Premier League (IPL). He did not spare a single record in 2018 edition of the domestic Twenty20 league. After Manish Pandey and Mayank Dagar, he surpasses Team India skipper Virat Kohli in the much-talked-about Yo-Yo Test score.
Karthik ended the edition with a fairytale tale when he scored the final runs of the tournament. He banged the ball over the mid-off that meets the boundary ropes and with this, Madurai Panthers clinches their maiden title of TNPL in the third edition of the league.
Arun Karthik earned salutes:
He received a collective tribute from the team who changed their plans in the midst. All the team members were stoically waiting for the final moments. They broke the rhythm of their celebration to pay tribute to their hero.
The wicketkeeper-batsman of Panthers felt overwhelmed by this gesture. Emotionally, he opened his arms to embrace his teammates.
A team who has desperately waiting to register a win in last two editions ended up by winning the tournament. It is evident, who was the hero behind it all.
In a chat with sportstar, the 32-year-old Karthik said,
“We had a good team, and we knew we were capable of doing good this season. After the first loss, we gelled together as a team, and the first victory pumped confidence within us. By the playoffs, the boys did not need me to motivate them. I just concentrated on my job, the others on their own,” he maintained.
As mentioned, he did not spare a single record for the other player. He finished the tournament with most runs, most number of sixes, most half-centuries and maximum average.
“It felt good, and I did not expect all of these. Throughout the season, I had the hunger and desire to do well. I just wanted to contribute to the team. All other achievements are secondary,” he said.
Better Yo-Yo score than Virat Kohli:
Karthik believes fitness is the key to success. He said that one needs to stay fit to participate in such tournaments.
“I had passed the Yo-Yo test a month back with a score of 19.2. You need to be in excellent shape in these tournaments,” he said.
If we will shed a little light on his words, he scored much more in Yo-Yo test than Indian skipper, Kohli. Team India has undergone a Yo-Yo test before flying to England in which Manish Pandey topped the chart with 19.2.
The Indian skipper, Virat Kohli scored 19 in it.
He said that just being a youngster would not work when it comes to playing in T20 leagues. Karthik proved himself before everyone who had a decade-long experience in the national circuit.
Earlier, Mayank Dagar registered the Yo-Yo Test score of 19.3.
“In T20 you have to be very fit. But that is not all. You also have to have enough experience and a better understanding of tough situations which would help you keep your calm. Just being a youngster would not help,” he said.
