The talks surrounding the addition of two new teams in IPL ahead of the next season is gathering steam now. Reports regarding the same is doing the rounds ever since the thirteen edition of the tournament came to an end last month. IPL 2020 concluded on November 10 with Mumbai Indians clinching the title.

Soon after its conclusion, reports suggested that the BCCI would release the tender for the new teams after Diwali. The Indian cricket board has remained silent on the entire matter but is all set to expand its T20 league. At its Annual General Meeting (AGM) on December 24, BCCI will formally add two new teams to the league.

Ahmedabad the likely new team:

With BCCI all set to approve the two new teams, the Indian cricket fraternity is busy guessing the two new cities which will be the home for the new franchises. Well according to Mirror, Ahmedabad is in all likelihood one of the two IPL teams that will be up for grabs.

The newly renovated mega Motera Stadium would be the first choice for any team. The second team could be from anywhere – Lucknow, Kanpur or even Pune. The report further added that the BCCI might find themselves in a tight spot when deciding when to add the two new teams.

Given that it wants to start the 2021 IPL late March-early April, there may not be sufficient time for the new teams, with mega auction, planning of retention policy and much more. The apprehensions over the venue due to the COVID-19 pandemic is another reason that might make things tough for the board.

Once the AGM approves, the BCCI will go for tendering for the new teams. As per the report, Adani Group and Sanjeev Goenka of RPSG (owners of Rising Pune Supergiants) Group in Kolkata are the favourites. The owners of former IPL team Kochi Tuskers Kerala and Aurobindo Pharma from south India are also in fray.
