Australian wicketkeeper-batsman Alex Carey has made his signs pretty clear and laid his ambitions high on becoming the best player while facing the slow-ball bowlers.

Recently, the gloveman was quite uncomfortable against the likes of Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid and equally failed to put up a notable performance.

Carey scored 44 in the final encounter. Moeen Ali and Rashid were quite brilliant for England bagging 12 wickets each in the 50-over series. He made his Twenty20 International debut earlier this year.

Interestingly, Carey was further appointed as the vice-captain of the team in the shortest format before the English tour. The appointment of a relative rookie as the deputy in the squad goes on to prove that his leadership skills are highly rated in the domestic circuit.

“I want to be the best player of spin, We’ve seen through those middle overs we need to be better. It doesn’t have to be scoring boundaries every ball but at least manipulating the field, being a bit busier, and getting on top of the spin,” Cricket Australia quoted Carey as saying.

Carey took a lot of insights from the number one ranked side England in the world. The Three Lions were quite ruthless in the five-match ODI series. They were tested a bit in the final ODI at Old Trafford. However, Jos Buttler ensured that England reached the target with a wicket left.

“Sitting on the sidelines was tough watching the boys. Playing the last few games was a great experience for me. Playing in England, a one-day series against the best side in the world,” Carey added.

“I personally took a lot out of it sitting back watching the best side in the world go about their business, and how much work we’ve all got to do to lift our game,” he added.

The Aussies were up against a top-class spin bowling dup especially in the limited-overs format. The visitors were pegged back with consistent wickets in the middle overs.

Justin Langer, who’s the newly-appointed head coach along with Ricky Ponting, who has also joined the coaching staff, are trying to work on the technique of the players against spinners in the nets.

Alex Carey gets some useful tips from Gilchrist:

Meanwhile, Carey also got some useful tips from the legendary Adam Gilchrist.

“It’s more the off-field stuff and just coming into a game with a pretty clear mind of ‘What’s going to be best for the team to win a game?'” Carey revealed.

“The best part about ‘Gilly’ is, he kept it pretty simple when he played and he’s doing the same with the messages he’s giving us. If there’s anything it’s just little bits and pieces but it’s pretty much ‘what’s best for our team to win?’ and going into games with that mentality. It keeps everything else pretty simple,” he added.

“I’ve been speaking to ‘Punter’ (Ponting) about whatever it is that comes up. There’s so much I’ve spoken to him about and (I’m) just trying to take what works for me as well. Just taking bits from all these guys (Langer, Ponting, Gilchrist) and trying to put it into my game, without trying to complicate it as well,” he concluded.
