Shreyas Iyer has undergone a meteoric rise in the last two years as Delhi Capitals offered him the captaincy spot while he also went on to regain his place in the Indian team. It was in 2018 when Gautam Gambhir stepped aside as the skipper of the Delhi-based franchise, paving the way for Shreyas Iyer. What initially seemed like a reckless move has paid off handsomely. And keeper-batsman Alex Carey heaped praises on Iyer.

The IPL 2020 edition was the first time that Delhi Capitals reached the finals of the tournament. Though the Capitals faltered to the eventual champions Mumbai Indians and wobbled at the back end of the group stage, Shreyas Iyer was a proactive captain for the most part. The right-handed batsman not only used his elite group of bowlers effectively but also performed well with the bat. In 17 matches, he clubbed 519 runs with three fifties at 34.60.

Ahead of India’s limited-overs series in Australia before the Tests, Alex Carey backed Shreyas Iyer to lead India one day. The keeper-batsman, who played for the Delhi Capitals in IPL 2020, sees fantastic leadership skills in the youngster and is going to be one moving forward. Carey underlined that Shreyas focussed more on the group, keeping himself aside and been successful for the Capitals in the last two years.

No doubt he’s got the potential to lead India one day. I think Shreyas is going to be a fantastic leader moving forward. His ability to connect with all the players in the group was fantastic. He took the focus off himself and worried more about the group. He’s been really successful for the last couple of seasons for Delhi,” Carey said as quoted by Hindustan Times.

The South Australian further said that the Mumbai batsman is a great person, who is still learning the nuances of captaincy. Carey underlined that to keep together a large group in Delhi Capitals and interact with them is a challenging task, which Shreyas Iyer did effectively. The positive attitude and his partnership with head coach Ricky Ponting impressed Australia’s limited-overs keeper.

He’s still young and learning his crafts. He’s a fantastic batsman and a great person as well. To connect with every player in a big squad like Delhi is quite a tiring task but he was excellent in managing that. His positive attitude towards the game and his partnership with Ricky really worked well for us. The future is very bright for him,” the 28-year old added.
