Despite Aaron Finch’s present long-form downturn, Australia interim coach Andrew McDonald is certain that Finch will lead Australia’s T20 World Cup title defense later this year on home soil.

Finch has played 12 T20Is and three ODIs since the commencement of the last T20 World Cup in the UAE in October 2021 without scoring a half-century. He has a 15.73 ERA in 15 innings pitched in all formats, with a strike rate of just 97.92.

In his 15 innings, he also has nine single-figure scores, including back-to-back ducks against Pakistan in the last two ODIs. Aaron Finch’s participation in the T20 World Cup, which will be held in Australia later this year, was never in doubt, according to McDonald.

“There’s no discussion about him not being there from my end,” McDonald added. “Like other players, his form ebbs and flows, and his ability to push through these blips have been crucial throughout his career. The last time we talked about David Warner before the T20 World Cup, we had the same conversation.

“All of these discussions will take place. Do we believe he’s still capable of playing at this level? Yes, absolutely, and I believe that’s as basic as it gets for us.

“As a captain, we’re forming a squad around him.” It’s a big deal to be talking about not being able to attend the T20 World Cup. We believe he is still capable of playing at this level.

Aaron Finch is disappointed with his current performance: McDonald

“There’s no doubt he’s disappointed with his current form,” McDonald said. “That plays out on the big stage, but in terms of mechanics, he’s probably not moving the way he wants to move right now.”

“That’s probably something we need to fix, and he’s working on it at training.” It’s the same as anything else; we’ve gone down this road before. He can get his legs crossed over a little bit and put a little too much weight on his left leg at times.

“It’s not an unusual occurrence.” So, ideally, we’ll be able to get through it, even if the duration in between these games hasn’t allowed you to work on it as much as you’d want.

“There’s a common theme there, but it’s something he’s been able to work through in the past, and we’re sure that he’ll be able to work through it as his career progresses.”

Despite being the hot choice to take over the vacant head coaching role full-time after Justin Langer’s departure, McDonald has still to decide whether he will lead Australia’s coaching staff at the T20 World Cup.
