Usman Khawaja was the shining light for Australia in their reply to England’s first innings total of 393 runs in the ongoing first Test of the Ashes 2023 at Edgbaston in Birmingham. The visitors struggled to get going and lost wickets at regular intervals. 

But it was Usman Khawaja, who held the fort and brought Australia back in the game. The southpaw look unfazed by the wickets falling at the other end and played a great patient knock that made English bowlers think differently.

It doesn’t even once look like Usman Khawaja struggled as he carved his way to the magnificent century, his first in England. The Australian opener batted for 321 balls and ended with a score of 141 runs. His knock made sure that his side get close to England’s total.

Usman Khawaja was back in the hut after a brilliant yorker by Ollie Robinson outfoxed him and sent his stumps cartwheeling. But what caught the attention of many was Joe Root’s gesture after that. The former English skipper went running to him and congratulated him for his innings by giving a pat on his back.

Ashes 2023: Australia gets bundled out for 386 runs in their first innings 

Apart from Usman Khawaja, other Australian batters look scratchy on the field and lost their wickets at regular intervals. Travis Head managed to strike a half-century along with Alex Carey, who scored 66 runs. 

Ollie Robinson and Stuart Broad chipped in with three wickets each whereas Moeen Ali picked two wickets along with James Anderson and Ben Stokes, who bagged one wicket each as England folded Australia’s innings for 386 runs, taking a lead of 7 runs.
