Former Indian pacer Ashish Nehra has defended Jasprit Bumrah’s recent performances against the Kiwis. India faced a humiliating defeat at the hands of  Black Caps as they clean swept India 3-0 to clinch the ODI series.

It is for the first time in 31 years that the Men in Blue have been whitewashed in a 3-match or more ODI series. Individual performances reached to a new low in the series and now questions are being raised over certain aspects.

Indian skipper Virat Kohli had the poorest series with the bat since becoming the ODI captain scoring only 75 runs in the series. Apart from him, pace spearhead Bumrah went wicketless throughout the series for the first time since his ODI debut.

Many fans and experts all across the globe have criticized these performances.

However, there is a certain set of people who believe that the team can’t win every game and every series and a bit of faith must be shown upon the players.

Ashish Nehra Comes To The Rescue of Jasprit Bumrah:

India’s former pace spearhead Nehra has now come to the rescue of Jasprit Bumrah. He highlighted the fact that Bumrah has just returned from injury and should be dealt with patience.

“You can’t expect Bumrah to deliver in every series. One has to remember he is returning from injury. It’s difficult for anybody to keep performing at the top of his game all the time. Even Virat Kohli has had a quiet series,” Nehra told TOI.

Nehra also mentioned that the other bowlers in the team should also assume their responsibility and Bumrah should not be pressurized the way he’s being.

“The Indian team management could be much better while picking the playing XI. The other pacers, besides Bumrah and (Mohammad) Shami, need to know their roles. They have got used to having Bumrah and Shami firing for the last two years. There’s too much pressure on Bumrah. There has been very little consistency in the team selection so far,” Nehra added.

The series loss has come as a shock to Indian fans and spectators. It is India’s first series loss since the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019. The whitewash has come after a very long time and the team should now introspect and work on their shortcomings.

India will now take on New Zealand in a two-match Test series. The first game of the series will begin from February 14 at Wellington.
