Former England spinner and Director of cricket (ECB), Ashley Giles believes that staying in the bio-bubble will take a toll on the mental health of the players and staff.
Post the restart of cricket in the pandemic era, England has hosted West Indies, Ireland, Pakistan, and Australia. Giles during these times observed the difficulties in managing the players as these are unprecedented times in sport. ECB did really well, and all the tours went according to the schedule. Giles hopes their opposition will co-operate the same way.
Can’t keep the same people in those bubbles the whole time: Ashley Giles
Ashley Giles agreed that these are different circumstances, but it is not normal for players to spend a long period of time in a bio-bubble and with the same people. He said that they are working on strategies to get people in and out of the bubbles in an easier way, and expect cooperation from the opposition teams. With lots of cricket coming up, Giles feels the bubble might affect the mental fitness of the players.
Ashley Giles told Sky Sports, “These are extreme circumstances for everyone — it is not normal spending a long period of time in a bio-secure environment. We are working on strategies to get people in and out of bubbles easier, whether that be players or management, and that will need the cooperation of opposition teams.”
“We are very aware we have a huge amount of cricket coming up and we can’t keep the same people in those bubbles the whole time,” Giles added.
England defeated West Indies and Pakistan in the home Test series post the resumption of cricket. They will be touring South Africa for 3 T20Is and 3 ODIs starting 27th November.
