Delhi Capitals head coach Ricky Ponting has caused a stir by stating that he will have a “hard conversation” with Ravichandran Ashwin over the idea of ‘mankading’ ahead of the upcoming IPL season. The former Australia captain made it clear that  the franchise has a strict policy against the controversial method of dismissal.

Ashwin had faced criticism from several quarters during IPL 2019 by mankading Rajasthan Royals’s English star Jos Buttler. The dismissal turned out to be decisive as Royals who were cruising at that stage thanks to Buttler went on to suffer a defeat.

In the wake of the incident, Ashwin was berated by several fans as well as cricketers. The mode of dismissal is completely within the laws of the game but is widely considered as against the spirit of the game. But it looks like even if Ashwin decides to mankad any player this season, he won’t be allowed to by his team-management.

Recalling the incident, Ricky Ponting revealed watching that dismissal and making it clear to his team it’s not the brand of cricket they would be playing. He also said he will be having a chat with Ashwin so that both of them are on the same page about mankading.

“I’ll be having a chat with him about [mankading], that’s the first thing I’ll do,” said Ricky Ponting on The Grade Cricketer Podcast. “Obviously, he wasn’t in our squad last year, he’s one of our players that we tried to afford to bring in this year. Look, he’s a terrific bowler, and he’s done a great job in the IPL for a long period of time now, but I must admit watching that last season, as soon as it happened and he did that, I actually sat our boys down and said ‘Look, I know he’s done it, there’ll be others around the tournament who’ll think about doing this well but that’s not going to be the way that we play our cricket. We won’t be doing that’.

“So, that’s going to be a conversation and that’s going to be a hard conversation I will have to have with him, but I’m pretty sure he’ll take it on the chin,” he added.

Several fans are unimpressed with Ricky Ponting over his comment for his own team’s player just days before the start of the season. A number of fans took to Twitter to troll as well as criticise the Australia great. While some asked Ashwin to go ahead and do something that is well within the laws, few even reminded the former cricketer of his own antics in international cricket.
