Asia Cup 2018: Twitter Goes Wild As MS Dhoni Returns As India Captain After 696 Days

The fans were in for a huge but pleasant surprise before the toss for the fifth Super Four game of the Asia Cup between India and Afghanistan. The cricketing world must have been expecting to see Rohit Sharma coming out for the toss. However, MS Dhoni left everyone pleasantly surprised by coming out for the toss.
Dhoni returned to lead India as Rohit was rested for the clash. The World Cup-winning skipper had stepped down as India’s limited-overs captain in January 2017 and handed over the reins to Virat Kohli.
The veteran batsman donned the captain’s hat for India for the first time after 696 days.
And as soon as he walked out for the toss, he created yet another milestone. The game is Dhoni’s 200th ODI as India captain. He had last captained India in the ODI series against New Zealand. He thus became only the third player to lead a side in 200 ODIs. Ricky Ponting led Australia (ICC) in 230 ODIs from 2002-2012 while New Zealand’s Stephen Fleming led in 218 ODIs from 1997-2007.

Dhoni is India’s most successful captain across formats. Under Dhoni, India won three major ICC tournaments: the World T20 (2007), the World Cup (2011) and the Champions Trophy (2013).
Not surprisingly, the fans were quick to react to see Dhoni back as skipper. Here are some of the reactions:
Delighted to see @msdhoni captain India for the 200th time. Great tribute to the legend this and very good call to give everyone a break.

Now do we need a captain like Rohit Sharma, who gives everyone opportunity, or a captain like kohli who not only plays all the matches, but also promotes favourism. Rohit is a true leader. Go Dhoni! #INDVAFG
