India’s middle-order batsman Dinesh Karthik was seen receiving some batting tips on how to encounter spin from former Indian skipper MS Dhoni. Karthik was standing behind MS Dhoni when the latter was batting in the nets. Meanwhile, MS Dhoni scored 51 runs from 96 balls in the first ODI against Australia. However, Dhoni was unfortunate to be dismissed when the ball had pitched outside the leg-stump.
Dhoni stitched an alliance of 137 runs with India’s vice-captain Rohit Sharma to keep India in the hunt. The visitors had their backs against the wall when they were reeling at 4-3. A partnership was the need of the hour for the tourists however Dhoni could not rotate the strike at regular intervals.
Dhoni will like to put his foot on the accelerator.
On the other hand, Dinesh Karthik could not get his timing going. Karthik could have played second fiddle to Rohit Sharma, however, the Tamil Nadu batsman could not hit the ground running. Dinesh Karthik scored 12 from 21 balls when the required rate was reaching sky high.
Furthermore, Ravindra Jadeja also failed to deliver the goods with the bat. Consequently, Rohit Sharma was battling a lone battle where he had to take a risk on almost every ball.
It was never going to be easy and India fell short by 34 runs. On the other hand, Australia came up with collective team performance. Usman Khawaja, Peter Handscomb and Shaun Marsh scored half-centuries to take Australia to a par score of 288 runs. In fact, the hosts got 90 runs from the last 10 overs.
Subsequently, Jhye Richardson bowled with fire and scalped four wickets for 26 runs in his 10 overs quota. Richardson got the ball in the right areas and helped Australia take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
The second ODI will take place at Adelaide Oval on January 15.
