Australia vs India 2018-19: Twitter Erupts As India Win Thriller In Adelaide
Updated - 10 Dec 2018, 11:55 AM
India, on Monday, beat Australia by 31 runs to take one nil lead in the four-match Border-Gavaskar series.
Virat Kohli & Co. survived a late scare to wrap up the game and win the series-opener. India were well on top when Shaun Marsh and Travis Head came out to bat on day five. Chasing a record 322, Australia had ended day four on a precarious 104 for 4.
Never in their history, Australia had chased more than 302 at the Adelaide Oval. With history as well as the current scenario totally against them, Australia needed a solid start on day five to revive their hopes of saving the game or registering an improbable win. But the slim hopes took a huge blow when Ishant Sharma had Travis Head caught to leave Australia reeling at 115 for 5.
Marsh then brought up his fifty to give the home fans something to cheer about. He and Tim Paine calmed down the nerves for a while but their resistance did not last long. Marsh fell for 60 when he feathered an edge off Japsrit Bumrah behind to wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant. It ended the promising 41-run stand between him and the Australia skipper.
Paine and Pat Cummins showed some much-needed fightback as Australia headed to lunch without suffering any more setback. At lunch, the hosts were 186 for 6, still needing 137 runs to pull off a miraculous win.
The second session began on a perfect note for India. Cummins and Paine could add only a solitary run before the latter edged a Bumrah delivery to the wicketkeeper. At that point, it looked all but over for the hosts. However, Australia’s stubborn tail was not ready to give up. Cummins along with Mitchell Starc added 41 runs for the eighth wicket to revive Australia’s slim hopes. Mohammed Shami broke the dangerous stand by sending back Starc. Cummins and Lyon then took the score past the 250-run mark.
Just when things were getting nervy for the visitors, Bumrah struck to remove Cummins and reduce Australia to 259 for 9. The drama, however, was not complete yet as Lyon and Josh Hazlewood added 32 runs to frustrate the Indians before Ashwin dismissed the latter.
Here is how Twitter reacted to the game:

Test Cricket is Best Cricket. Great fight by Australia in the end but India were too good. Winning after being 41-4 in first innings is a special effort. Outstanding Test match for Pujara and great effort from our bowlers. Promises to be a great series #AusvInd pic.twitter.com/PEYzKuBsap

Ashwin removed his sunglasses. Still failed to land a single delivery in the rough to No. 11 on a day 5 pitch. Hopeless. #AUSvIND https://t.co/rAdf5hJrxh

Rishabh Pant is now the Indian wicketkeeper with the most catches and words in a Test match.#AusviND

If wicket doesn't fall in next few minutes Indian fans will come up with different playing XI in every tweet.

R Ashwin has bowled 50 or more overs in a Test innings only on four occasions in his Test career.
He has now done so twice at Adelaide (53 overs in 2012)#AusvInd#AusvsInd— Mohandas Menon (@mohanstatsman) December 10, 2018
Interesting- Since Australia were 84-4 , the partnerships have been 31, 41, 31, 41, 31 .#AusvInd

Bit perplexed that Kohli has persisted with Ashwin virtually unchanged. Thought he might attack a bit more with pace at both ends.
— Harsha Bhogle (@bhogleharsha) December 10, 2018
Just a hunch… but I think Kohli might not be appreciating the thrill of an exciting Day 5 contest. #AUSvIND

Bumrah is the one continue to pitch in the rough where Ashwin is reluctant to make use of it..
Spin failed miserably on day 5?

Jasprit Bumrah & Cheteshwar Pujara have ensured that 1000s of Indians did not sacrifice their sleep in vain! #AusVIND

So the last 5 wicket partnerships
31 (5th Wkt) , 41, 31, 41 and 31 (9th wicket). You can imagine the frustration and the way Virat threw the ball after the catch showed it all #AusvInd— Prabhu (@Cricprabhu) December 10, 2018
An interesting perspective on this Test
*India batted for 198.5 overs total
*Aust total is 208 overs and counting – while many of the shots played have drawn criticism, that is a big improvement in crease occupation on many of their matches this year #AUSvIND— Daniel Brettig ? (@danbrettig) December 10, 2018
