India ended the opening day’s play of the Boxing Day Test match in the dominating position as they got 215 runs for the loss of two wickets. The tourist’s captain Virat Kohli won the toss and decided to bat first on a flat MCG track. Mayank Agarwal and Hanuma Vihari gave a cautionary start to the visitors as they added 40 runs for the opening wicket.
Agarwal was the aggressor as the Karnataka batsman found the gaps to perfection. On the other hand, Hanuma Vihari was stoic in his approach. Vihari took 25 balls to get off the mark and took his own time. In fact, Vihari had the rub of the green on his side as Nathan Lyon decided not to go for the review.

India takes the opening day.
However, Pat Cummins was able to get the better off Hanuma Vihari with a fine bouncer. Vihari could not get away from the line of the ball and failed to take his gloves away.

Meanwhile, Mayank Agarwal batted with aplomb as he showed his compact technique. Moreover, Agarwal became the second Indian batsman on debut to score a fifty on Australia soil.

Thus, it was a perfect start for Agarwal as he scored a fine knock of 76 runs. However, Agarwal was unfortunate to get out as Pat Cummins bowled a short ball towards the leg-side and Agarwal got a glove to Tim Paine.
On the other hand, Cheteshwar Pujara was once rock solid in his knock. In fact, Pujara defended the good balls whereas he was able to put away the bad balls. Furthermore, Virat Kohli continued with his sublime form as the Indian skipper batted at the top of his game.
Thus, India were able to put their noses in front and would look to continue with their domination tomorrow.
Here is how Twitter reacted to the opening day’s play:

Runs have been at a premium, but India with only two batsmen dismissed hold the edge. Of course a 2-3 quick wickets tomorrow could change the equation dramatically. Much depends on how Pujara-Kohli negotiate first hour. Story of first day surely Mayank Agarwal’s fine debut

Great day for India. Given the MCG pitch, we need to score at least 450 to be safe. Not bothered at all with the slow scoring. Should look to bat for two days and then put pressure on Aus. #BoxingDayTest #AUSvIND

Wonderfully played by Mayank Agarwal. Has shown no nerves and the mountain of runs he has scored seems to have stood him in good stead. Has batted so far like he belongs

Hopefully, Indian fans and vocal supporters of aggressive batting and advocates of showing intent and expressing yourself will one day realise the value that Pujara brings to this Indian side. #AUSvIND

A mountain of runs by @mayankcricket finally got the 5 (or 3) wise men to give him his due. A good debut by him. I hope he gets a consistent run and goes from strength to strength.

Tough pitch to bat. Dictating attritional cricket. Kohli walks out and decides to set his own pace….and then Australia takes a ‘Desperate Review System’ ? #AusvInd @7Cricket

Very well played @cheteshwar1 Imp phase of play. Job isn’t done yet. New all due in 10. India needs to capitalise on the good start.

Another 50 from Pujara. Discipline is one of the most undervalued asset in modern day cricket. #AusvInd @7Cricket #BoxingDay
