The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has appointed former South Africa batsman Neil McKenzie as their batting consultant until the 2019 World Cup.

The announcement was made on Wednesday (June 18). He has performed coaching stints earlier and might be a good addition to the Bangladesh outfit.

The former Proteas batter McKenzie was supposed to join the team on seventh of July. But, as per BCB chief executive Nizamuddin Chowdhury, he will now be available with the squad in the Windies on 22nd July.

McKenzie, who has represented South Africa in 124 internationals matches across formats will be taking over the reign from former Sri Lankan batsman Thilan Samaraweera.

“We are expecting his arrival on July 22,” Chowdhury was quoted as saying by the reporters at Mirpur.

“We have appointed him until the next ICC World Cup. The team are confident that his vast experience will help our team, and our batsmen in particular,” he added.

Bangladesh will look to work with McKenzie immediately:

The Tigers will be keen on working with him owing to an immediate effect. They have been quite miserable in the recent past.

Bangladesh suffered two morale shattering defeats at the hands of the Windies in the recently concluded Test series. The Bangla Tigers performed very poorly and ended up losing both the fixtures inside three days.

Well, it was a thoroughly professional performance by the Windies team. However, it was largely possible due to the consistent failures of the batsmen in testing conditions.

Neil McKenzie had earlier been the batting consultant of the South African national team. He was first appointed way back in 2016 and his second stint came in 2018.

Mckenzie will begin his tenure with the Bangladesh team with the three-match ODI series against the Caribbean team against whom they faced thumping defeats.

The 50-over series will commence from 22nd July in Guyana.
