Bangladesh Cricket Board announced a 32 member primary squad for the upcoming home season which includes a tri-nation series including Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe followed by a Test series against Sri Lanka. Bangladesh team will start their preparations from December 27.
Bangladesh will play this two series without a head coach after Chandika Hathurasinghe resigned from the head coach’s role to join the Sri Lankan team on October 15. It is all set that either Khaled Mahmud or Richard Halsall will act as the interim head.
The National Selectors have given importance to the recently concluded Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) and National Cricket League. As a result, few young cricketers have come into the contention for the national selection while many experienced cricketers are eyeing an international return.
Chief Selector Minhajul Abedin said recently said that they are confident about the potential the young cricketer possesses.
“We decided to include all possible options available to us for the upcoming home series. It will be challenging for us as we have to meet up the expectations of the home crowd while the duration will also have some kind of impact considering they have played non-stop cricket for quite some time in the recent past,” Minhajul said about the primary squad while talking to Cricbuzz.
Talking about the huge squad, Minhajul stated that they want to keep the players ready because it will be a long home season and also want a healthy competition for a spot in the first XI.
As per Minhajul, young spinner, Mehdi Hasan has been outstanding in his debut BPL season, while it was the same with seasoned left-arm spinner Nazmul Islam Apu, who was not considered for a long time by the national selectors despite good performances in domestic cricket.
Minhajul concluded stating that the team management is not keen to make a lot of changes but at the same time, they don’t want their place to take everything for granted.
