The swashbuckling opener from Hobart Hurricanes, D’Arcy Short has been rewarded for his record-breaking season. Short was recently named as the Big Bash League (BBL) Player of the tournament.
Short registered a record 504 runs for the Hurricanes in the regular season, including a tournament record score of 122. His stunning form also earned him a T20I spot in the Australia team.
However, Short failed to carry, as he got out cheaply during Australia’s chase. Eventually, Australia won the match banking on Chris Lynn and Glenn Maxwell.
The southpaw has a chance to add to his run tally when his Hobart side takes on Adelaide Strikers in tonight’s KFC BBL final.
Short was adjudged the winner by polling 26 votes on the 3-2-1 system. He was eight clear of Sydney Thunder captain Shane Watson and ten in front of third-placed Alex Carey. The standing umpires cast votes at the end of each match.
Perth Scorcher’s Ashton Agar was rewarded with the BBL Young Gun, as the leading player aged under 25. Agar polled 15 votes to finish fourth on the overall tally, one ahead of Scorchers teammate Ashton Turner and Strikers spinner Rashid Khan, who sit in the same age bracket.
Agar bagged eight wickets at a stunning economy rate of 5.74 and averaged almost 50 with the bat to also earn a call-up for Australia’s tri-series campaign.
Amy Satterthwaite and Sophie Molineux of Melbourne Renegades won the equivalent awards in the Rebel Women’s BBL.
