Young sensation, Jofra Archer has signed a new two year deal with the Hobart Hurricanes, which will keep him at the club until the ninth edition of the Big Bash League (BBL).

Archer was a late call-up for the Hurricanes, contracted when Tom Curran was called into England squad for the Ashes. Archer was quick to make an impact claiming 15 wickets in 10 fixtures helping Hurricanes to secure a semifinal spot.

Archer, who is ice-cool on the field was excited to extend his deal.

“I’m very excited to be staying. I’ve grown to love Hobart – it’s a really nice place. The home supporters really make you feel welcome and they back you in. Especially that last over against the Strikers, it was one of the best atmospheres I’ve bowled in. The Big Bash is a really great competition to play in and to learn,” Archer said.

Archer’s outstanding BBL campaign landed him with a hefty 7.2 crores deal with Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Archer further admitted Hurricanes had approached him a couple of weeks ago about signing on beyond this season.

I think it was after the game against the Adelaide Strikers at Blundstone Arena that the Hurricanes came to my management and said they wanted to re-sign me,” Archer added.

With Archer re-signing, Hurricanes already have two international locked for the next season with England’s Tymal Mills already contracted. The duo is also teammates at Sussex, with Archer admitting he is keen to continue bowling with him.

I think it will have a big impact on the team because we can help each other on the field and we can see where each of us might need to improve.

So having two overseas players from the same place really helps the bond with each other and the team,” Archer stated.

The 22-year-old Archer is also enjoying the cult figure status he has earned from BBL.

It means a lot. It’s a bit different from England – they support you on the field, but you don’t get recognized much off the field. Whereas here whenever you go down the street, everyone is saying ‘well bowled’ or ‘nice catch’, which is heart-warming really,” Archer concluded.

Hurricanes will fly to Perth to play the semifinal clash against Scorchers on Thursday at the New Optus Stadium.
