BCCI Extends MSK Prasad & CO's Tenure Till Annual General Meeting
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly set to extend the MSK Prasad-led national selection committee’s tenure until the next Annual General Meeting (AGM). According to reports, the three-member panel has been given the extension because the date of the AGM is yet to be finalised.
“Yes, the senior national selection committee has been handed over a temporary extension. Now the tenure of that cannot be ascertained as no one knows when the AGM will be held,” a senior BCCI official told PTI.
The contract of the selectors is renewed every year with the cycle that starts on September 1 coming to an end on August 31. But with the dates of AGM still not confirmed as the Supreme Court is yet to give its verdict, the trend has not been followed.
The official further insisted that the board has no other option but to continue with the current panel as the selection committee can be changed only at the AGM.
“Till Supreme Court passes the final order and the Lodha Constitution is formally adopted at the AGM, no decision can be taken. Since September, the selectors were out of contract. As per norms, selection committee can only be changed at the AGM. So we have to continue with this current lot as of now even if it means the extension is for a few months,” the official said.
Meanwhile, the current selection panel has mixed experience since taking charge last year. The three-member committee was initially praised from all quarters for being crystal clear in selection but has recently been criticised for the lack of clarity over Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja’s ouster from the limited-overs squads.
The spin duo has not been picked in the team for the ODI and T20I series against Sri Lanka, New Zealand and Australia. The panel had initially said that the duo was rested, but the extended rest for the spinners has raised a lot of eyebrows.
