The auction for the upcoming season will be held on January 27 and 28, and hence, it was a great move by BCCI to take this step. Earlier, the tournament was to be played from January 21 to February 10. This would have had no use for the players and franchises as well. Now, the tournament will be played from January 8 to 27.

Various franchises floated in a request to BCCI to advance the tournament and hence, the T20 tournament was preponed.

However, Irani Cup had to pay the price for it as the competition between the Ranji Trophy champions and Rest of India team has to be deferred until March. The Vijay Hazare Tournament has been preponed as well.

Earlier as well, BCCI used to organise the Syed Mushtaq Ali tournament after auction which served no purpose. It was before the 2015/16 season when players floated the idea of advancing the tournament before the auction so as it serves some purpose.

This year though, the BCCI organised auction so early but also made a correction soon.

Just like last year, the tournament will follow the same process where the teams would first play against the teams of their zones before a combined team from that zone will play against another zone.
