The mega-auction for the upcoming IPL season will take place on January 27 and 28, a report in PTI suggest. Since its a mega-auction, it will be a two-day affair.

“Since most of the capped players will be back in auction, it will be a mega auction that will be held in Bengaluru on January 27 and 28. Since Bengaluru has been hosting all previous auctions, that was the choice of franchises,” a senior BCCI official told PTI.

IPL retention rule

The IPL governing council has already announced the retention rules ahead of the auction. As per the rules, a franchise is allowed to retain a maximum of five players through retention and RTM card. A franchise can retain a maximum of three players ahead of the auction.

To retain the first player, a franchise has to spend a total of Rs 15 Crore. To retain the second player, a franchise will further spend an amount of Rs 11 Crore while to retain the third and last player; a franchise will have to pay an amount of Rs 7 Crore further.

On the auction day, the amount spent by a franchise to use RTM card will depend on the amount at which a player will be purchased by another franchise.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) are allowed to retain the players who played for them in IPL 2015 given the condition that they should have been part of either Gujarat Lions or Rising Pune Supergiant in the IPL 2017. This means that Rajasthan Royals will not be able to retain a player like Pravin Tambe since he played for Sunrisers Hyderabad during the two years.

The IPL franchises are yet to announce the players they would be retaining. Though the players like MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and few others are few of the players, who are confirmed retentions.

Keeping the mega-auction in mind, IPL GC also decided to increase the purse of the franchises. Every franchise is allowed to spend a total of Rs 80 Crore in the auction compared to Rs 66 Crore in the previous auction.
