The pace bowling trio comprising Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Shami and Umesh Yadav have wreaked havoc on the opposition and made the job much easier for Virat Kohli as the game came to a close in 3 days itself. Impressed by the bowlers’ performance, bowling coach Bharat Arun couldn’t have asked for a better outcome from these bowlers.

He praised Ishant Sharma’s experience, Umesh Yadav’s character and Mohammed Shami’s seam position. Without Jasprit Bumrah, the trio bagged 14 wickets in an innings and 130 runs win over the visitors in the first Test in Indore. Veteran Indian fast bowlers know what it is like to bowl in their den. Usually, spinners dominate the game by taking more wickets than pacers as the game progress but this time around, the pacers came out on top much to visitors’ annoyance.

According to Bharat Arun, being the No.1 team is the toughest job. “I think at present we are the no. 1 team in the world. Getting there is difficult, staying there is even more difficult. I think to do that over a period of three years, you need to stay constantly hungry,” Bharat Arun added after the match.

Digging a tad deep about Ishant’s bowling when he came round the wicket to left-hander (Shadman Islam dismissal), India’s most successful bowler said: “Actually started working on that variation from yesterday. So if you look at the way he signalled after he got the wicket, he was very happy that he could do that.

Each time you try to explore new avenues in your bowling, you constantly look to improve. And this would give him the much-needed fillip to experiment more and try out,” he added.

“Ishant is probably the most experienced bowler we have. He has played over 90 Test matches. He felt that he needs the batsmen to play a lot more. It was about him trying to experiment with different angles. What he’s doing now, suits his bowling best,” the bowling coach said.

Talking about Umesh Yadav, Arun said: “Umesh showed a lot of character in coming back.” According to Arun, Shami’s seam position is the best in the world. A little while ago, South Africa fast bowling great Dale Steyn termed Shami as the best Test bowler in the world based on current form.

“Shami has always had the speed. It’s not fair to compare but if you look at bowlers all around, Shami’s got probably the best seam position. And one way to maintain the speed is he’s spent a lot of work doing his fitness. There is a perfect balance between fitness and the bowling he does. I think that works very well for Shami and that’s the secret behind it,” he said.
