New Zealand was expected to upset Australia in Perth after beating England 1-0 in the Test series at home. But, it was the other way around. Australia destroyed New Zealand in all facets of the game and won by 296 runs. The Aussies missed the services of fast bowler Josh Hazlewood who sustained a hamstring injury midway into the opening Test match which ruled him out of the game.

Despite his absence, premium pacer Mitchell Starc rose to the occasion and picked as many as nine wickets to his name. Mitchell Starc bowled with good rhythm and pace and it was so easy for him to rip through the defence of Kiwis’ batsmen. New Zealand has a lot of catching up to do to stay alive in the series. They have two more games to sort out their woes.

Meanwhile, former Australia skipper Ricky Ponting said that Australia have set the foundation for the series. He added that New Zealand showed no teeth in their bowling attack. “Australia have set the tone for the series. I was worried about New Zealand coming here and with a lack of penetration with their bowling attack,” Ponting told cricket.com.au.

Ricky Ponting also stressed on the fact that Australia are playing a fearless brand of cricket at the moment while adding that if they continue to play like this elsewhere then New Zealand don’t stand a chance to win a game against Australia. “Australia have played some really good cricket here in Perth and if they continue to play anywhere near that I can’t see New Zealand winning a game,” Ponting added in a statement.

The first Test match has been done and dusted as the hosts took a 1-0 lead in the three-match Test series. The second match is scheduled to play at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on December 26 (Thursday). The third and the final Test match will be played at Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) on January 3 (Friday).
