Chetan Sharma, Harvinder Singh Re-Apply For BCCI Selector’s Job

Former BCCI chief of selection panel Chetan Sharma and selector Harvinder Singh, whose tenures came to an end recently, as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) chose not to extend their contracts, have reapplied for the job which was advertised by the board some time ago.

After the T20 World Cup where India’s journey ended in the semi-finals, the BCCI had decided not to extend the tenures of their selection committee. Fresh applications were invited and the BCCI is going to have a new panel in the coming weeks.

Including Sharma and Harvinder Singh, more than 60 applicants have applied for the post, but the other two members of the panel, Sunil Joshi and Debashish Mohanty chose not to reapply. The BCCI hasn’t received applications from any ‘big’ names barring a few former cricketers who wish to become members of the five-member selection committee.

As per the criteria set by board, candidates should have played seven Test matches or 30 first-class matches or 10 ODIs and 20 first-class matches. The applicant should have retired from the game at least five years ago.

Interestingly, one of the applicants is current junior selection committee chairman S Sharath. Some other prominent names who have reportedly applied are Venkatesh Prasad, Dodda Ganesh, Maninder Singh, Nikhil Chopra, Atul Wassan, Reetinder Singh Sodhi, Nayan Mongia, SS Das, Salil Ankola, Sameer Dighe, Ajay Ratra, Gyanendra Pandey, Jacob Martin, Subroto Banerjee and Iqbal Siddiqui.

Apart from this, the BCCI is yet to name a new Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) which has been left with one member Sulakshana Naik. This after former pacer RP Singh left the committee and joined the Mumbai Indians IPL franchise as a talent scout.

The new selection panel will have to “appoint captaincy for the team in each format”.

Hardik Pandya is the front-runner to take over from Rohit Sharma as the captain in the T20I format. This due to his performances as captain on Ireland and recent New Zealand tours and for leading the Gujarat Titans to the IPL 2022 title in their debut year.

As for Rohit, he is already 35 years old and the Board may want to keep him as captain for the next year’s 50-over World Cup on home soil, while Pandya will be groomed as Indian captain for the next T20 World Cup in 2024 which will be played in the West Indies and the United States.
