Cheteshwar Pujara continued his brilliant run in England’s domestic season with back-to-back hundreds in the Royal London One-Day Cup.

Following an astounding campaign in the County Championship for Sussex, Pujara is shining in List A cricket with his batting prowess.

After scoring a century against Warwickshire in just 73 balls, the Sussex captain posted his career-best List A figures on Sunday. Pujara scored 174 in 131 balls, including 20 fours and five sixes, to propel Sussex’s score to 378/6.

Pujara, who is leading Sussex in the absence of regular skipper Tom Haines, hit a six each against pacers Matt Dunn, Connor McKerr and Ryan Patel. He also targeted the spinners, smashing one six to Amar Virdi and Yousef Majid. He added 205 runs with Tom Clark for the third wicket to rescue the team after the dismissal of Sussex openers at an early stage.

Clark perished at 104 but that didn’t stopped Pujara from holding one end, and pulverised the Surrey bowling unit.

In response, Surrey opener Ryan Patel (65) and Tom Lawes (57) scored half-centuries but that wasn’t enough to see off the target.

Sussex pacer Aristides Karvelas (4/35) and spinner Delray Rawlins (3/25) bundled up Surrey’s innings at 162 in 31.4 overs.

“Pleased to contribute to the team’s win tonight. Great play by the entire team @SussexCCC. We move onto the next one on a high note #SharkAttack,” Pujara tweeted after Sussex’s 216-run victory.

With 364 runs in five matches at an average of 91.75, Pujara is the second most run-getter in the Royal London One-Day Cup 2022 only behind Middlesex’s Stephen Eskinazi (540).

Sussex have jumped up to the third spot in Group A with three wins in five games. They next face Durham on August 17 at the Riverside Ground in Chester-le-Street. Surrey will play Somerset at their home ground at The Oval in London.
