Arvind Pujara, the father of Cheteshwar Pujara, one of India’s mainstays in Tests has stated the county stint with Yorkshire for a couple of months had helped his son get acclimatised to the conditions in England.

The run also helped Pujara prepare himself for the challenges in England. Earlier, Pujara was re-signed by Yorkshire after his efforts helped his county side win the county championship in 2015.

Meanwhile, Cheteshwar Pujara had also played country cricket for Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. His father, Arvind feels it was a fruitful stint for his son. Pujara didn’t score much and could only make 172 in 12 innings.

However, during that time, the right-handed batsman played on some of the toughest pitches. It was quite cold in England when he had toured the country for his county stint.

“It was a fruitful stint. Though he did not score much for Yorkshire [172 runs in 12 innings with the highest score of 41], he played in some of the toughest conditions in those two months there. When he went to England, it was quite cold. And then, there was rain due to which the pitches were damp. In the latter part of the season, the temperature was quite high. When he played in those conditions, he got himself quite equipped to face the English bowlers in the series,” Arvind Pujara was quoted as saying by mid-day yesterday.

Meanwhile, it must be noted that Arvind Pujara is also the first coach and mentor of Cheteshwar Pujara. He would have wished to see his son in action during the opening Test against the Windies at his home ground in Saurashtra.

However, it wasn’t possible, as Arvind was down with a back problem. Meanwhile, Cheteshwar made 86 in the 1st innings.

Arvind Pujara thinks there is no room for complacency and his son shouldn’t afford to feel he has reached his peak.

“If you start thinking that you have reached your peak, you become complacent, and your progress can be hampered. It is not worth thinking about whether this is my best phase or not. Results can go either way, but a good work ethic will always keep you in good stead,” concluded Arvind, Pujara who was a former first-class cricketer.
