Alex Hepburn, the former Worcestershire cricketer, has been jailed for five years after raping a ‘dozing’ woman as part of a ‘sexual conquest competition’ with his teammate. Meanwhile, the event dates back April 1, 2017, when Hepburn raped a girl after she had consensual sex with Jos Clarke, Hepburn’s teammate.

Meanwhile, Perth-born Alex Hepburn, an all-rounder with English county Worcestershire, denied the rape allegation, claiming the woman opened her eyes and kissed him at the start of a 20-minute sexual encounter. Giving evidence claimed the woman contacted him about four months after the incident and told him she wanted to drop the case. His trial at Hereford Crown Court heard how the pair had exchanged vile messages boasting about how they got women blind and then back to ours.

But jurors didn’t believe him, and Alex Hepburn was today sentenced to five years behind bars and placed on the sex offenders’ register for life. In what the judge Jim Tindal called a brave victim impact statement, the woman Hepburn attacked described her ordeal as evil and a serious crime.

In exchanges not heard before the jury, it emerged that Alex Hepburn had set the rules for the sexual conquest game, just four days before the rape took place. He and other members of the group agreed to challenge each other to see who could sleep with the most women. In one message Hepburn admitted he had slept with 60 ladies since the start of the cricket season.

Sentencing Hepburn, Judge Jim Tindal said,

I sentence you on the basis the jury were sure the victim was woken by you but was still barely awake and in the dark thought you were Joe Clarke. You thought you were god’s gift to women. You saw the victim as a piece of meat, not another human entitled to respect.’

Although he was cleared off of a second count of rape, the judge gave a five-year jail sentence at Hereford Crown Court for one count of rape.
