10 Cricketers Who Died On Field Due To Injury; The game of cricket has witnessed various things over the years that kept fans entertaining and get awestruck by them. However, amidst those brilliant scenes on the field, there have been many that devastated the cricketers, fans and the regular followers of the game across the world. There would be nothing hurtful than seeing the cricketers losing their life while playing the game of cricket.

10. George Summers – 1870

It was way back in 1870 when George Summers was died on the field after facing an injury on the field. Unfortunately, he is the first person to die in the field. When he was batting on the typical batting pitch at Lords, the ball took off from a length and hit Summers on the left cheekbone (as per the footnotes by the scorer). He collapsed on the spot.

Nottinghamshire Guardian reported that the ball “struck him a violent blow on his head, the ball missing his temple by about half an inch. Summers reeled backwards senseless.”
9. Abdul Aziz – 1959

The only batsman before Phillip Hughes to die on the cricket pitch from a short ball was Pakistan’s, Abdul Aziz. In 1959, he was hit in the chest while batting in Karachi and collapsed on the field. 17-year old Aziz had a weak heart and died from the blow. He was rushed to the nearby hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
8. Wilf Slack – 1989

Slack went on a tour to The Gambia for a Cavaliers XI in 1988-89 [following tours to Israel and Barbados] for a friendly tour. In a match at Banjul on January 15, 1989, Slack suddenly collapsed while batting. He was rushed to the hospital. He never recovered. He was only 34 years old.
Post-mortem reports eventually revealed a damaged artery — something that had gone unnoticed over the years. With heart screening still in its nascent stage, Slack’s problem was never diagnosed.

7. Ian Folley – 1993

Who would expect that a person would die when he gets operated for an injury to his eye? Unfortunately, it happened in his case. Ian Folley was hit below the eye in an accident while batting in a domestic match for Derbyshire against Workington. He was under an anaesthetic in the hospital and suffered a heart attack during the surgery, which took away his life.
6. Raman Lamba – 1998

It was an all-together a different issue but unfortunately succumbed to death. The Indian player Raman Lamba died while fielding during a club match in Bangladesh in February 1998. He was fielding at short leg when a shot from the batsman hit his dead.

He was fine initially but succumbed to his injuries after struggling for three days in Coma. Apart from India, Lamba represented Ireland in unofficial ODI matches.
5. Wasim Raja – 2006

Wasim Raja was one of the finest from the stables of Pakistan. He was an agile fieldsman and a handy leg-spinner to boot. Born in Multan, Wasim was the eldest of three cricketing sons. Rameez Raja represented Pakistan at the top level whilst Zaeem Raja played first-class cricket for Multan and Lahore.
After bowling just 2-3 overs at the age of 54 years, he complained of uneasiness. Soon he collapsed on the field, succumbing to a massive heart attack.

4. Richard Beaumont – 2012

English club cricketer Richard Beaumont had one of the best games of his life when he took five wickets in a domestic Test for Pedmore CC. But shortly after his five-wicket haul, he collapsed on the pitch reportedly due to a heart attack. The fast bowler was transported to Birmingham’s Queen Elizabeth hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival.
3. Zulfiqar Bhatti – 2013

Zulfiqar Bhatti was a 22-year-old club cricketer who died in December 2013 after receiving a blow on his chest while batting in a T20 tournament in Sukkur, which is located in Sindh, Pakistan. He collapsed on the ground and was rushed to the hospital immediately. He was pronounced dead on arrival. Bhatti would have been a successful cricketer for Pakistan with his brilliant talent.
2. Darryn Randall – 2013

The South Africa cricketer also died in the same year of Zulfiqar. He was trying to pull a shot and that’s when the ball struck his head. He collapsed on the pitch and was immediately rushed to the hospital but couldn’t revive upon arrival. He played a total of four first-class matches and the same amount of List A games for domestic side Border. It was an unfortunate injury.
1. Philip Hughes – 2014

It was a massive shock for the cricket fans, who never expected it would happen to such a promising cricketer Philip Hughes. The Australian batsman was hit in the neck while trying to pull bouncer of Sean Abbott in a domestic match. He missed the ball and it struck him on the neck.
He fractured his skull and suffered massive bleeding in his brain as a result, and was operated upon in a Sydney hospital. The operation, however, was ultimately in vain as Hughes died of his injuries a couple of days later. The whole Australian fans were present at his funeral.
