The stylish southpaw D’Arcy Short receives a call-up for the upcoming tour to India for a three-match ODI series. Short comes in as a replacement for Sean Abbott, who suffered a moderate side strain while playing for the Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash League on Friday. He stands sidelined for three-four weeks.

Sean Abbott was set for his ODI return after five years since his debut in 2014 against Pakistan. The fast bowler has done well in the ongoing BBL, picking up 11 wickets in five matches. But, unfortunately, he suffered an injury at the wrong time, which opened the doors for D’Arcy Short, who played 4 ODI games so far.

D’Arcy Short offers an extra spin all-rounder for the team – Trevor Hohns

Short last played for Australia in 2018 against South Africa. After losing his form a bit, the selectors tried a different set of openers before David Warner makes a stunning comeback after his ban. Speaking of the same, the national selector Trevor Hohns expressed his sympathy for Sean Abbott and believes D’Arcy Short is a value addition for the team.

“It is extremely unfortunate for Sean Abbott, who is very much a part of our white-ball squad plans leading into the ICC T20I World Cup and the 50-over World Cup,” National Selector Trevor Hohns said as per India Today.

“D’Arcy offers the squad another spinning all-rounder option along with Ashton Agar, which along with the four world-class fast bowlers and Adam Zampa balances the squad out nicely. His proven record and ability to bat anywhere in the order will also be a great asset to the squad.”

Perhaps, it was a right call from the board to have D’Arcy Short for the India tour. Australia already have four frontline pacers in Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Kane Richardson for the India series. D’Arcy Short, apart from his big-hitting abilities, also provides an extra bowling option as he is a handy leg-spinner.
