Jos Buttler, who scored 35 & 9 in the first Test at the Rose Bowl in Southampton, has managed just 627 runs in 14 games at an average of 23.22 with just three half-centuries since the start of 2019.

With another failure in the first Test, Buttler is under pressure to retain his position in the team.

“Buttler has got two Test matches to save his career, for me,” Darren Gough told Sky Sports Cricket

“He’s a terrific talent, lots of kids look up to him and he has all the shots. But, in Test cricket, you can’t just keep getting out and that’s what he keeps doing,” Darren Gough added.

Speaking about England’s selections in the first Test, Darren Gough said that Stuart Broad, who was dropped in Southampton, w will come back.

He also added that if he were the selector, he would rest Mark Wood and James Anderson for the Old Trafford Test and bring in Stuart Broad and Chris Woakes.

“I think Broad’s coming back in. I would rest Wood and Anderson at Old Trafford and bring in Broad and Woakes,” said Gough.

Gough reckoned that England should look at rotating Jofra Archer and Mark Wood while also adding that the home side got a bit carried away after seeing Wood tee off against South Africa in the winter.

“That would be my plan then, with back-to-back Test matches, you bring Anderson and Wood back (for the third Test). I’ve said from the start – rotate Archer and Wood,” Darren Gough added.

“We got a bit carried away, seeing Wood bowl really quickly in South Africa. We’ve seen Archer do it, but it’s very hard to do it every single game. Broad, Woakes and Anderson are the reliable three, while Archer and Wood will blow away the opposition on their day.” he said.
