Former Australia head coach Darren Lehmann has advised Justin Langer to step down from the top position to avoid burning out as he did during his five years stint in that role.

Meanwhile, Lehmann stepped down in the wake of the ball-tampering scandal during the South Africa series at Cape Town. The incident also saw three players receiving sanctions due to their involvement. Reflecting on his stint, Darren Lehmann feels he should have quitted earlier considering the superb time he has spent with the national side.

I look back now and I had a fantastic five years coaching Australia,” Lehmann told Adelaide radio station FIVEaaBut I look back now and go ‘maybe it was a bit too long’. You’re away 300 days of the year. I speak to Justin Langer quite regularly just making sure he gets some time off when he can because you’re on the road and it’s 300 days of high pressure trying to win every game. That takes its toll in the end,” he added.

Darren Lehmann took over their reigns on the eve of the 2013 Ashes and guided Australia to the 2015 World Cup. They also won the Ashes on home soil in 2013-14 and 2017-18 and the Test side to the No.1 ranking twice (2014 and 2016).

However, he was set to continue till the end of 2019 summer which included the World Cup and the Ashes.

But after seeing the press conference of the banned players and continuing taunt on his family members, an upset Lehmann said he could no longer continue in that position. And it’s only now that Darren Lehmann is beginning to feel like his old self again.

I was in a bad place like everyone for a little bit of time,” he said. “It’s taken me the last three months, I’m starting to feel a bit more normal and enjoying watching the cricket again. It’s been good days, bad days, but getting over it and (I’m) looking forward to cricket again,” Lehmann continues.

In conclusion, Darren Lehmann admitted that he loved every minute of his stints and congratulates Justin Langer for the upcoming years.
