Toronto Nationals skipper Darren Sammy has welcomed former Australian skipper Steven Smith into his team. The Ex-Windies captain is excited to have a player like Smith in the squad.

Interestingly, disgraced Smith will play under the captaincy of Sammy in the Global T20 Canada league.

Sammy believes Smith’s experience will be vital for the franchise in the tournament.

Furthermore, the World Cup Twenty20 International-winning captain added that Smith did well by accepting his ball-tampering charges in South Africa.

In fact, Sammy said that we all make mistakes in our lives. Thus, Smith deserves a second chance.

“We all have done our fair share of mistakes in life, not just sports but in general,” two-time world T20-winning captain Sammy told a conference call on Monday. “Obviously Steve Smith is an amazing cricketer, someone who I would have on my team any day,” Sydney Morning Herald quoted Sammy as saying.

Smith’s comeback journey to cricket will begin on June 28 when he will turn out to play for Toronto.

Sammy gave full credit to Smith for accepting his mistakes in the ball tampering scandal.

“Obviously as captain of a national team you have certain responsibilities that you have to own up to for the team, and I was commended by his efforts and he has taken responsibility for his actions on the field. I am just happy to have a player of such calibre on my team. He has dealt with his punishment for what happened in South Africa,” Sammy added.

Smith has all the experience under his belt. Consequently, Sammy believes Smith‘s experience will be crucial for the upcoming tournament.

Darren Sammy wants to make the most of Smith’s class as a batsman as well as a leader of the side.

“All I want is his experience as a leader, his experience as a T20 player and his performances on the field that could help Toronto Nationals be a force to be reckoned with,” the Windies all-rounder went on to add.

Meanwhile, David Warner will also partake in the same tournament. The combative southpaw will represent Winnipeg Hawks in the Global T20 Canada league.

Global T20 Canada tournament Director Jason Harper also welcomed Smith into the competition. Harper added that Smith is a world-class player and they are happy to him on board.

“Are you kidding me? Steve Smith is a world-class player. We are happy to have him. This is world-class talent at its best. There is no way we would turn away Steve Smith when the phones open. No way. There is no way. He is welcome,” said Harper.
