David Gower, former England stylish batsman-turned commentator, recently picked his all-time Test XI consisting of current cricketers.

In a side that features the likes of Kane Williamson, Joe Root, Steve Smith, Ravichandran Ashwin, Nathan Lyon, Gower reckoned that Indian skipper Virat Kohli and champion all-rounder Ben Stokes will be the immediate picks in his Test XI.

While Virat Kohli, the No.2 Test batsman in the world, is one of the leading batsmen in Test match cricket thanks to his ability to make runs in all conditions, Ben Stokes is the current No.1 ranked all-rounder in the world, someone who has time and again proved his mettle with both bat and ball.

”Ben Stokes and Virat Kohli will be the instant picks for him and there are no two ways about it. If a current day spinner is to be chosen it would be between Ravichandran Ashwin or Nathan Lyon,” David Gower said on the SportsTiger’s show ‘Off-the-Field’.

With 33 wins in 55 games (12 defeats), Virat Kohli is statistically the most successful Indian captain. Gower reckoned Virat’s unrelenting desire and passion to win games for his country as the reason behind picking him as captain.

“If I have to pick a captain for the team it will surely be Virat Kohli, what I like about Virat apart from his talent is his passion and absolute drive. Cricket is still a game where you can be a brilliant individual within the team but too much of individuality can also be harmful but Virat is an extraordinary individual contributions to the team.” David Gower added.

Virat Kohli has been quite vocal about his love for Test cricket in the past and Gower said that a leading player like Virat hailing Tests as the mist important form of the game is a great PR for the traditional format.

“Virat Kohli as the leading player of the world calling test cricket as the toughest and most important form is great PR for the format,” he said.
