Making his way back to cricket after serving a 12-month ban, David Warner showed his class in the ICC World Cup 2019. Though he failed to make things fall in place in Ashes Trophy, Warner made his way back among the run-scorers during the home Tests. For all his effort, he received Australia’s biggest honour “Allan Border Medal”.

The AB medal is awarded to the most outstanding male cricketer in a calendar year. This was the third medal of Warner, apart from him, former captain Ricky Ponting and Michael Clarke have won the award four times.

David Warner had a fantastic 12 months – Allan Border

Speaking of the same, the former Australia skipper Border has said that left-handed batsman Warner deserved to win the top cricket prize in the country, — the Allan Border medal. He also added that it may be time to look at the voting system for the medal.

“There was a sense of surprise when the final name was readout. But I think there were three or four very good contenders, with Smith and Pat Cummins in particular, Mitchell Starc, even Nathan Lyon had a fantastic 12 months,” Fox News quoted Border as saying.

“But David Warner, with the way the votes were, came out on top. Very close margin but I think a deserved winner. He had a fantastic 12 months apart from that Ashes series, where Steve Smith was unbelievable. That’s why the voting was very, very close,” he added.

It is time to have a bit of a look at that voting system:

Border further added that the officials might look after the voting system following the latest set of things. He also highlighted the importance of scoring runs away from the home venue in the longer version of the game.

Steven Smith missed the prize with only one vote while Pat Cummins missed it by a margin of 10 votes.

“It’s very difficult to rank away Test matches against home Test matches. I have heard a little bit of argument about all that and it has some merit. There’s no doubt about that,” Border said.

“Maybe the voting system can be looked at. We’ve been going for 21 years, it’s probably time to have just a look at how the votes are put together and how it’s all combined over the three, four months of the game for that final winner. Maybe it is timely to have a bit of a look at that voting system,” he added.

After receiving the medal, Warner gave an emotional speech and admitted how he let down his fans due to his infamous involvement in the ball-tampering saga in the 2018 Test series against South Africa at Cape Town.

However, after a one-year ban, Warner smashed 692 runs in 12 IPL matches and later, he amassed 647 runs at an outstanding average of 71-plus in the ICC World Cup 2019.
