England opener Jason Roy has reportedly pulled out of the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The thirteenth edition of the IPL is less than a month away and is scheduled to start on September 19. The entire competition will be played in UAE because of the pandemic situation in India.

The report regarding Jason Roy comes on the back of ECB announcing on Thursday that the star batsman had been ruled out of the T20I series against Pakistan due to a side strain he picked up this week. The right-handed batsman injured himself during the team’s preparation for the limited-overs series in Manchester and had a scan on Wednesday.

And while ECB also confirmed that Jason Roy would remain with the England squad and undergo rehabilitation in order to regain full fitness ahead of their next limited-overs assignment – against Australia, ESPNcricinfo has reported that the hard-hitting batsman has decided to opt out of the competition.

Delhi Capitals had secured his services in the most recent players’ auction for his base price of INR 1.5 crore. The England World Cup-winner is not new to playing in the IPL. In 2017, he had plied his trade for now-defunct Gujarat Lions before playing for Delhi in 2018.

And while he is regarded as one of the best players in limited-overs cricket in the world, he is yet to make his mark in IPL. In 8 games so far, he has managed to score just 179 runs with 91 of them coming in one innings.

Before Jason Roy, his compatriot Chris Woakes had also pulled out of the IPL. Woakes was also to play for Delhi Capitals. The national capital-based outfit later replaced him with South African pacer Anrich Nortje.
