The hero of the 1983 World Cup final against West Indies Mohinder Amarnath believes the IPL performance should not be considered for the World Cup spot. In fact, the All India selection committee gives weight to the IPL performances. Thus, we have seen players getting selected in the Indian squad after performing well in the IPL.

Meanwhile, there is a day and night difference between the Indian Premier League and the World Cup. Ergo, the player’s skills for World Cup place should not be gauged by the performance of the IPL. It is far easier to perform in the IPL than doing the same at the World Cup event. Hence, the domestic circuit must be the platform from which the player should be picked for the national side.

Amarnath makes a good point.

“Yes, the IPL will be played in between but players’ form in this tournament should not be taken into consideration when the team is being selected for the Cup. It should be on the basis of what they have achieved in the international arena,” Amarnath wrote in his column for Times of India.

India has ticked the right boxes in the recent past. They went on to clinch the ODI series against Australia by 2-1. Furthermore, India continued its domination in New Zealand as they outplayed the hosts in the first three matches to take an unassailable 3-0 lead. However, Men in Blue was obliterated by eight wickets in the fourth ODI.

India has ticked the right boxes.

“Overall, this is fantastic preparation for the upcoming World Cup. India has tried out quite a few players and they’ve all done well. So the selectors are going to have a bit of a headache while choosing the final squad for England. However, they must remember that after the Australian series in India, there will be a gap of a couple of months before the World Cup begins,” Amarnath wrote.

Mohinder Amarnath has hit the nail on the head. Yes, the IPL will take place before the World Cup but the selectors should take into consideration the overall performance of all the players who have performed consistently in the last two years. Consequently, those players should be given priority in the World Cup squad.
